Systemic hypertension (SH) is a non-communicable disease and asymptomatic in its early stages, of multifactorial and polygenic with an elevated risk of mortality due to its high incidence, associated with cardiovascular, brain and kidney disease, and thus is considered a major problem in public health in Brazil and worldwide. Treatment of hypertension is composed of two components: drug therapy and non-drug, this in turn, consists of strategies to change the lifestyle and that can lead to lowering the dose of medicines or even to his dismissal ; It is in relation to this nutritional support of fundamental importance for the prevention of its chronic complications. This study aims to present an overview of the importance of pharmacological and nutritional treatment in the control of hypertension. This is a retrospective study of literature in the Lilacs and Scielo databases of articles published in the last five years, covering about Hypertension. In various combinations, the descriptor: Hypertension; Diagnosis and treatment; Pharmaceuticals and nutrition; Cardiovascular diseases, from the material found was a study summaries and selected works were analyzed, categorized and discussed from the literature. Were included in this review 95 articles, 36 articles published in the Lilacs, Scielo and 34 in common to the two bases 25, most publications are in 2013 with 27.4% of the publications, the most talked about topic is on pharmacological treatment of hypertension , totalized 29,5% of the work, and more research among selected were done with adults, with 55.8% of jobs among the 95 under study. So are necessary educational activities for adherence to pharmacological treatment associated with changes in lifestyle, so there is prevention and control of hypertension.
