Abstract

This research aims to problematize the representations of the Northeast built by the writings of José Lins do Rego (1901-1957) and published with the 1930 novel. More precisely, the book Engenho's Boy (1932), composing the so-called “Sugarcane Cycle” in the work of Zé Lins, to understand as the Northeast is (re) presented in that book. The 1930 novel became emblematic for emphasizing the northeastern reality, in which several intellectuals narrated everyday situations, taking into account the characteristic elements of their region. Among novelists of this period, José Lins do Rego stood out for portraying aspects of the northeastern sugar society, in particular the decay of the mills and the rise from the plant. In this sense, its representation of the region is based on a narrative and nostalgic memory that turned the sugar mill into an element definer of the Northeast. In theoretical terms, according to Roger's proposition Chartier, use will be made of the concept of representation. Thus, through the written by José Lins do Rego, this paper aims to relate the history and the noting the contributions that such interdisciplinary dialogue provides to the scientific knowledge
