Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the representation of cangaceiros in the literature, with
emphasis Lampião, the "King of Cangaço", for being the most influential and
represented in the literature. Another also analyzed is Severino of Aracaju, a
prototype of Lampião, which has great similarities in the representations. The
cangaceiros have become established and rewritten in the literature of different
aspects: sometimes brave; sometimes pious and vigilantes, as we shall see in twine
and works throughout the study. This work will be concerned about analyzing some
of these representations, specifically in two plays, "Lampião" (1953) Rachel de
Queiroz and "Auto da Compadecida" (1955) by Ariano Suassuna. For effective use of
the work as authors: Albuquerque Junior (2013), made a historic journey on the
symbolic creation of the Northeast and the male; Camelo Filho (2008), Gruspan-
Jasmin (2006), which recounted the life of the greatest cangaceiro, motivator, for the
most literary productions, Virgulino Ferreira da Silva. These literary representations
we have images of brave bandits, manly, ruthless that oppose the kind of images,
naive and religious.
