Resumo:
Literature is considered among many conceptions, an instrument of communication and
social interaction, since it conveys the knowledge and culture of a people. The epic, in turn, is
an epic genre, one of the oldest manifestations of Literature, which refers to the historical
feats of a people, a nation, with the presence of mythological beings. While the textbook,
besides being a very important tool for the formation of the student, is an instrument of
growth for the same one, since it assists and contributes much in the daily pedagogical
practice of the teacher, besides being theoretical and practical support for the student in
school and beyond. When reflecting on the role that the textbook has in the classroom, this
work aims to analyze the partial absence of the same, in relation to its historical
contextualisation of the epic genre in the book Viva Portuguese of the first year of high
school, as well as describe the emergence of the epic genre in ancient Greece and Rome
and to evaluate how Classicism takes up the Greco-Roman model of the epic genre. To do
so, we propose a didactic intervention for Portuguese Language teachers who work in that
year. We are based on the reflections of Aristóteles (2008), Calvino (1993), Jaeger (2001),
among other theorists. It is a bibliographical research of a qualitative nature in which we seek
from the knowledge of Schneuwly, Dolz and Noverraz (2004) the guidelines for the
construction of the didactic intervention proposal. As for the results, we do not always find in
the books what we want to see, but we can help from our critical eye, to contribute more and
more to this knowledge to expand and be able to heal the curiosities and worries of
researchers who, like us, wish the best ever.
