Ringworms are illnesses produced by fungi that can be deep or superficial. On superficial ones, the skin, nails and hair are affected, causing some diseases like tinea versicolor, candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis. The factors that cause seborrheic dermatitis
are not well known, but there is one commonly accepted theory that lies on the proliferation of Malassezia furfur fungus. For the treatment, ketoconazole is one of the most common used drugs, being a broad spectrum imidazole derivative. It acts blocking the conversion of lanosterol in ergosterol, needed to keep the membrane integraty of the cellular organisms. Ketoconazole shampoos is the most used pharmatical solution to treat these infections. On this work, Candida albicans is utilized as biological marker, since ketoconazole acts on it.
This work aims to evaluate ketoconazole shampoos quality parameters, considering the requirements for this type of product. A set of different types of analysis were conducted: labeling analysis, organoleptics, physicochemical (pH, viscosity, centrifugal test, foam index) and microbiological potency assay. After that, it was concluded that the five evaluated products were approved in the labeling, organoleptics, pH and centrifugal tests.
On the viscosity test, products from A, B and C labels are in accordance, but products from
D and E are not following the literature parameters. About the foam index, products from
labels D and E are more consistent, comparing to the other ones. On the potency assays, C and D presented a performance below the expected (generic). Concluding, all products were capable to inhibit the microbiological development of Candida abilcans.
