Résumé:
We know that the charge comprehension most of the time is a challenge for some students
and readers because many of them have difficulty to understand the implicit message between
the lines. Thus, the goal of this study is to present literacy's contribution to the construction of
meaning in cartoons and discuss this genre as an important pedagogical tool for the teaching
and learning process in Portuguese classes taking into consideration the students previous
knowledge associated with language skills for the sense formations. As theoretical basis, we
consider the postulations of Kleiman (2005-2007), Smith (2004-2014), Marcuschi (2008),
Koch and Elias (2014), Antunes (2009-2010), Koch (2014-2015), Possenti ( 2013), Romualdo
(2000) among others. Regarding to the methodology, it is characterized as a bibliographic
research based on books and academic texts as well as qualitative and interpretative character
that aims the dialogue between visual and textual elements for the sense formations ruled in
Applied Linguistics. As a working proposal, it has been developed an activity in the 3rd
grade of high school which introduced the charge as a tool that enables the activation of the
students’ linguistic, textual and cognitive knowledge as an important factor to the formation
of the critical and reflexive awareness, making them able to interact in various
communicative background. Therefore, this work has enabled to show the possible sense
effects caused by t the charge use, genre that presents itself also as a didactic-pedagogic
resource that enriches the teaching and learning process.
