Abstract:
The phenomenon related to languages envolves values connected to culture, beliefs, social
and linguistics facts. This group of elements form parts that constitute a society, community
or group of people. Such elements are directly linked to sociolinguistics aspects. This research
prioritizes the phonetic variation and specifically the metaplasm known as rhotacism, due to
being constantly present in the oral speech, came to be regarded as stable variation, very
common in the speeches of those that possess low education degree. By this bias, the goal of
the survey is to analyze the oral speech of the residents of the Sousa-PB city, in order to
realize the phonetic variation present there. the specific objectives: To understand the basic
concepts of the sociolinguistic interactionism, to raise spontaneous oral discourses of
residents of the Sousa-PB city; identify the known metaplasms as rhotacism presented in the
selected speeches as corpus; and reflect on the influence of the schooling in the speech uttered
by the collaborating subjects. For so much, the theory that bases this investigation is
Variationist Sociolinguistic. The corpus and research field were constituted by three orals
speeches of residents belonging the same community known as Assentamento Zequinha, in
Sousa/PB area. The methodology of the research is ethnographic, with approach both
quantitative and qualitative. The results obtained with analysis of the speeches evidenced that
of the total of 138 metaplasms present in the discourses, 22 are rhotacisms. Of the three
discourses analyzed in this research, the rhotacism metaplasm suggests is directly connected
to the way people communicate in this community, becoming a constant habit in the speech of
these inhabitants.
