Resumo:
The aim of this work is to analyze and discuss Ariano Suassuna's Auto da Compadecida
concerning the presence of popular cultural elements, exploring the popular essence of the
texts that served as inspiration for its creation, its connection with the cordel and the Armorial
Movement. Theater is connected to literature in the sense that it uses the word as a conductor
of communication. In this connection, literature enables the cathartic essence of a theatrical
text.The selection of this play was due to the anonymity of its texts that are based on the
northeastern tradition of Brazil, in addition, it also presents a criticism to some segments of
Brazilian society. A synchronic survey on cordel with its themes and its characteristics were
exposed; A chapter on popular culture, with an emphasis on the thinking of the scholars Luis
Câmara Cascudo, Renato Ortiz and Afrânio Coutinho; In order to better understand how
popular culture manifests itself in this work, a subtopic was written about the characters of the
play Auto da Compadecida. Finally, a chapter was dedicated to the work that is the object of
study of this Course Conclusion Work, in which it was allowed to find Ariano Suassuna's
criticism directed at some sectors of Brazilian society, as well as, mainly, the elements of
northeastern popular culture.
