Resumo:
The function of the evaluation in the teaching and learning process remains a very controversial issue, which raises many doubts among teachers, teaching staff and school administration. Based on this assumptions, this study aimed to investigate teachers' conceptions regarding the evaluation in the teaching and learning process of a public elementary school located in Cuité-PB. For analysis purposes we used a qualitative approach, consisting of a field research associated with theoretical basis, questionnaires were used as data collection instruments through which we analysed the teachers' routine of evaluation; what evaluation instruments they use and with what purposes they evaluate their students. The result of this research made it clear that teachers are not yet familiar with the diversity of resources that the evaluation can provide for teaching and learning and not even its function leaving evidence that they do not take advantage of students' prior knowledge to evaluate and plan their lessons. There are a few teachers looking for a more qualitative way of evaluate, which aimes to achieve the results in a more diagnostic and formative way to guide teaching and facilitate learning.
