Dermatophytes are filamentous and keratinophilic fungi, belonging to the genera Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichophyton usually identified in superficial mycoses called dermatophytosis our Tinea, causing infections in humans or animals. Dermatophytoses have a high incidence in tropical countries, usually associated with low level of health education, which is a public health problem. However, you do not have an exact size parameter of the disease, because the mycoses not have mandatory reporting, and research in cities of Paraíba are insufficien. Thus, this research is relevant to contribute to the improvement of information and notifications on dermatophytes to the city of Cuité, furthermore, allowing both diagnosis and subsequent correct treatment of affected individuals. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of dermatophytosis in patients attended at municipal Hospital Nossa Senhora das Mercês, in the Cuité-PB. From March to August 2013, mycological examinations of areas of the body supposedly infected by fungi were performed. Samples of skin scales, hair and/or nails were sent to the Laboratory of Microbiology - UFCG , which were subjected to direct examination with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to 20% for microscopic morphological visualization, and subsequently the sample was inoculated in cultures Mycosel for isolation and identification of fungi. Samples from 31 patients with clinical suspicion of dermatophytosis , with 19.35% positive cases were analyzed. The age of the patients was 3-47 years, of which 3 were men and 3 women. The most frequent injuries were the previous, nails and feet trunk, with an incidence of 33.3% each. The genus Candida, along with the agent Microsporum canis were the most prevalent, with 33.3% each. This research, besides having contributed to the epidemiological study of superficial mycoses, allowed the clinical staff of the municipality make a diagnosis and correct treatment.
