Abstract:
This paper has as main objective to analyze the proposals of oral textual comprehension and
production in English language textbooks of the first year of high school, to realize to what level
these activities of comprehension and production of oral genres in English language can contribute to
the students capable of expressing themselves in the oral modality. The research is based on the
studies of Bakhtin (1997), Marcuschi (2001), Bygate (2001), and more, associated to the current
linguistic policies in the current educational context of Brazilian society, considering also the
language perspective which is perceived as a social activity - without neglecting the aspects of
structure and cognition inherent to it - that needs to be analyzed in relation to the sociocultural and
historical contexts to which it is submitted in the act of communication. In this sense, the textbook
being one of the main materials of support to the teacher, it is imperative that he is well prepared.
When developing the research, it is verified that most of the proposals of activities that approach
orality occupy a role of lesser importance from the quantitative point of view in the analyzed books,
since, little attention is given to this competence, in relation to the others.
