Resumo:
The annual precipitation in the state of Paraiba was reduced by about
22% during the dry year of 1992. Based on this fact a study was conducted with the
objective of identifying which of the meteorological parameters and phenomena were
related to the low precipitation observed during the year of 1992.
With the objective of conducting a detailed analysis of the rainfall
distribution, the Paraiba State was divided into four sub-regions: Sertao, Cariri,
Agreste and Litoral. Later it is verified to what extent these regions were affected by
the drought and their relations with the climatic anomalies observed during this
period.
Mean monthly fields of various meteorological parameters obtained from
CAC/NWS were analized. The analyses show that the Cariri region of Paraiba
suffered greatly from the drought of 1992 with a decrease of about 60% in its annual
rainfall, the Litoral region suffered the least, drought conditions were more intense in
the western part of the state than in the eastern part.
Another important characteristic observed is that some phenomena
generally known as inhibitors of precipitation over NEB do not explain completely
the low rainfall registered in the year of 1992 over the Paraiba State. It is suggested
that other factors such as the combined effect of presence in the atmosphere of
vulcanic dust from the 1991 eruption of Pinatubo in the Philippines and the ENSO
episode seem to have played a part in producing unfavourable conditions for
precipitation over NEB and particularly over the State of Paraiba.
