Abstract:
This work focuses on the trajectory of the cangaceiro Jesuíno Bright, about the particulars of
your cangaceirismo, – sometimes described heroicizada way and sometimes narrated centered
on the banditry. We present the context in which were included the actions of Jesuíno Bright,
a scenario of delay and ingrained in old precepts and customs. Then we question the
historiographical versions that were being built around the peculiar performance of this
cangaceiro substantially with regard his supposed goodness. As opposed to the discourses
which show Jesuíno as a hero of the less advantaged people, we will draw on another type of
narrative, present in the documentation. In newspapers of the time, as well as in criminal
proceedings generated in the episode of his invasion of chain city of Pombal, the "voices"
have other visions of the cangaceiro Jesuíno Bright, pointing it as dangerous bandit capable of
various atrocities: a transgressor of the law. The Multiple narratives, strolling between the
association to the heroism of a Robin Hood and the criminality of a police fugitive, offer us a
glimpse of the intriguing participation of Jesuíno Bright in the cangaço.
