The gastrointestinal helminthiasis represent an obstacle in the production of goats, causing severe damage
in the creation, as growth retardation, weight loss, decreased feed efficiency and milk production, low
fertility and in cases of massive infections, high mortality rates. This research aimed to determine the
prevalence of gastrointestinal helminthiasis, characterizing the sanitary management factors under these
conditions and forms of infection control measures adopted in herds of goats region Sertão of Paraíba. A
total of 256 goats were sampled systematically coming of 54 properties. We collected blood and stool
samples from each animal in the morning. When compared with the OPG index VG was observed
prevalence of 90.4% of the animals with OPG between 100 - 500 and VG ≥ 23 and 43.7% of the animals
with OPG> 3000 and ≤ 22 VG, being significant (p=0.004), noting that the higher the count of
gastrointestinal helminth eggs in stool volume less globular. In stool, the most prevalent helminth was
Haemonchus sp. (83.2%), followed by Trichostrongylus sp. (7.3%), Strongyloides sp. (4.2%),
Oesophagostomum sp. (3%) and Cooperia sp. (2.3%). The age and sex were significant (p≤0.20) for the
development of gastrointestinal helminths. Animals over 36 months are more likely to develop these
parasites (86.8%). In the category gender, 81.7% of females were found infected. The region Sertão paraibano characterized by semiextensivas creations (80.8%), supporting the prevalence of 90.3%
operating goats with double fitness (beef and dairy), which is a risk factor for the development of
gastrointestinal helminthiasis (p≤0.20). In the category gender, 81.7% of females were found infected.
We conclude that the region Sertão of Paraíba has a high rate of prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in
goat flocks, having been revealed to the category age and type of animal exploitation as the risk factors
relevant to the development of these parasites.
