Abstract:
This monograph has like objective to investigate the geographic knowledge of students in the
9th grade "A" State of Elementary School School Santa Maria Goretti, located in São José de
Piranhas-PB. The same do a historical analysis of geographical knowledge and teaching of
Geography in Brazil, discussing the methodology and didactics used in Geography lessons,
since the geographic knowledge is of paramount importance for civic education, providing
subsidies for practice social . This study has qualitative and data collection was done through
questionnaires with the said school students, getting narratives of 37 (thirty-seven) students.
Besides this method, there were bibliographical studies, has like theoretical support references
address the teaching of geography as the authors: Andrade (1987 and 1989), Person (2007),
Rocha (1996), Rodrigues (2008), Oliveira (2007), among others. Analyzing the results, it was
observed that students feature considerable difficulties with the concept of geography and the
object of study of the same. However, it is notorious the presence of a school geography
renewed where the student seeks to relate the textbook contents to the reality of the student,
providing the critical development of the students .Finally, we believe that this process will
contribute to the presents and future professionals of geographic education, where they can
rethink their teaching practices and functions that the geographical knowledge provides for
the formation of civic education.
