Resumo:
This paper studies the urban growth and the occupation of marginal areas, the Rio do Peixe, in
particular the Guanabara neighborhood in the city of Sousa-PB. This occupation behind a lot
of discomfort for the population living in these areas, because when there are long periods of
rainfall the river waters invade their homes. So the government takes action to provide its
community assistance services. The research aims to analyze the urban growth of the city, to
understand the reasons that led people to reside in hazardous locations. To this end, the
methodological procedures that helped the study took place in an orderly way with the
literature review, research and observations in the field and the record of the information
obtained. Therefore, we understand that the city grew because of the iron line, then the asphalt
and so on. But what keeps people in these locations is the identity that they have with their
place of origin. And also, we show that the government carries out interim and permanent
measures
