Aging is a continuous process that starts from birth and inevitably leads to death. This physiological process leads one to the third age stage of human life - elderly phase; all changes at this stage whether physical or biological can make these people feel devalued, useless, abandoned and alone. Currently the family is not ready and does not have the structure physical, economic , knowledge and time to accommodate the elderly at this time and seek alternatives and other spaces that accept care of these individuals - the long-stay institutions. Objective: To identify the emotions of seniors and their caregivers in long-stay institutions. Methodology: The study developed it is an integrative review conducted in the Virtual Health Library, at the databases SciELO, Bireme and LILACS, in online journals, the about Health, with the seguintes descritores: “elderly”, “emotions” and “Long-stay institution”. The inclusion criteria for selecting articles were: articles on the subject, that is, feelings and emotions of elderly residents in Long-stay institutions and their caregivers during the period 2005 the 2013 and as criterion for exclusion: articles Incomplete in foreign language and access restricted. In the search to articles, 564 articles were part of the universe of the research, and after application of inclusion criteria the sample was restricted to 13 items for analysis. Results: The results showed the year 2012 with the highest number of publications three publications; the area of knowledge and training of the authors was nursing (68%). Analysis of the material revealed three categories: “institutionalized elderly and emotions positive” the importance of good humor and a cheerful and pleasant environment for the elderly; “institutionalized elderly and emotions negative” Loneliness is one of the reasons which some seniors decide to reside in a LTCF; and “elderly institutionalized and the feelings and emotions of the caregiver” the family is the basis of everything, it has a fundamental role in building a structured, healthy and balanced society, the family being of the elderly who regrets more and miss. Conclusion: We conclude, therefore, that with the gradual increase in the elderly population the Institutions long for the Aged, become increasingly important and necessary as support, especially for those elderly who have no family structure to meet the demands of care.
