A new method for determining the setting parameters of the protection devices that make up a mixed scheme network, formed by overcurrent and distance relays, is carried out in this dissertation. By varying the range of the first actuation zone of the distance devices, it is possible to reduce the total actuation time of the overcurrent relays. A genetic algorithm is used in conjunction with a well-established computational routine dedicated to protection coordination studies in order to obtain this reduction. This routine provides the genetic algorithm with the data necessary for the selection step to choose only the individuals best suited to the problem at hand. This coordination method provides results that, when compared to those performed using traditional techniques, have lower overcurrent device actuation times.
