Resumo:
The childbirth is an important event in the life of a woman's cycle. It is a natural
step, but it can be stopped by artificial procedures, resulting in maternal and fetal
complications. It is important to follow a natural course, following the rhythm and the specific
needs of each woman's body with minimal interference of drugs. This study aims to analyze
the scientific literature on the use of synthetic oxytocin during labor, published in journals in
the field of health, between the period 2003-2013; furthermore, verify the adverse effects of
the use of synthetic oxytocin and list the possible suggestions/alternative mentioned by
several authors. This is an analytical literature review, integrative literature review, a
quantitative and qualitative approach, on the use of synthetic oxytocin during labor, published
in journals in the area of health. It was analyzed 20 papers published in LILACS and PubMed,
national and international, which had as its main theme and oxytocin induction of labor. It is
also to clarify that the data collection followed a structured containing objective and
subjective questions script. Data regarding the number of articles published per year in the
analyzed provenances were tabulated. The instrument of study was the analysis of scientific
papers. The subjective data obtained from the author’s opinion were analyzed in tables and
discussed in the light of the literature relevant to the topic. By considering the discovery of
drug for purposes beneficial to the society were recorded during the time that it has been
associated with various adverse effects which stand in postpartum hemorrhage, the Apgar
index lower than normal conditions, in the presence of meconium amniotic fluid, altered fetal
heart rate, uterine irritability, and nausea and vomiting. It is important to clarify that few
studies have examined with some precision the consequences that may identify a higher
accuracy. Therefore, it is expected that the study allows new insights regarding the use of
synthetic oxytocin in labor. It is also hoped that the study will serve as a stimulus for the
construction of other work aimed at better conditions for labor in favorable conditions,
searching through this understanding, actions that make a positive moment for the mother and
the neonate.
