Resumo:
With increased survival and the feminization of older ages, rises the occurrence of diseases
related to aging woman. Among these diseases highlight the osteoporosis, the most common
bone-metabolic disease that affects women during aging and the postmenopausal phase.
Osteoporosis is recognized as a disabling disease that causes serious complications, affecting
mobility and quality of life of patients. The present study aimed to assess the knowledge of
women on postmenopausal osteoporosis in Alto Sertão Paraiba. For this methodology was
adopted as a cross-sectional exploratory study of field with a quantitative approach and
descriptive statistics. The study was conducted in the city of Cajazeiras, with women of a
support group called "Friends of Sister Fernanda", belonging to an extension project of the
Federal University of Campina Grande. The results revealed that the predominant age group
was 61-63 years old (37.5%), mostly mulatto (50%), 60% are married, 42.5% have only
completed elementary school, 55% are retired, and 77.5% earn 1-2 times the minimum wage,
65% do not smoke, 92.5% did not drink alcohol and 62.5% practice physical activity. 45%
had a family history of osteoporosis. 95% are aware that osteoporosis can lead to the
emergence of fractures, 65% of respondents answered that osteoporosis affects more females,
57.5% reported that alcohol and tobacco are risk factors for osteoporosis, 50% said that
menopause is one of the causes for the development of osteoporosis, 90% responded that
physical activity and alcohol are protective factors for osteoporosis; 77.5% are aware of the
consequences that may cause osteoporosis and 52.5% said they knew the methods adopted for
the treatment of osteoporosis. Therefore, it is concluded that most of the women interviewed
have a good knowledge about osteoporosis, risk factors, consequences, treatment and care to
be taken to improve and control the progression of bone loss.
