Resumen:
The present study contributes towards problems faced by civil
construction specially the one caused by effects of soluble salts in bricks of
clay structure produced in the State of Paraiba. These salts provoke
efflorescences generally manifested as white stains on the surfaces of
structural pieces.
This research proposed to correlate the degree of efflorescence with salt
content extracted from bricks and salt content of raw material utilising
efflorescence test following methodology of ASTM C67, methods recommended
by EMBRAPA for estimation of salt content and a method adopted to determine
salt content extracted from bricks.
The results obtained permit to conclude that most of the specimens
studied present efflorescence problem and it is not correlated with salt content
of raw material but shows a significant relationship with extracted salt content
of bricks.
