The Primary Health Care in Brazil is the gateway to the many patients who seek the Unified
Health System ( SUS ) when they are sick , and the Basic Health Service has the feature to
promote actions in health , both at collective and individual , with the goals early diagnosis of
diseases , their treatment as well as rehabilitation and maintenance of patient health . We
investigate the use of benzodiazepines for users of a family health unit ( FHU) in a city of
high Paraiba backwoods . And to identify the factors that lead users to a USF consumption of
benzodiazepines . Checking the frequency of benzodiazepine use by users of a USF and
verifying that users of benzodiazepines receive professional guidance on adverse and
beneficial effects of these drugs . Field survey of descriptive and explanatory way , aiming to
cover the most relevant factors that predisposes individuals to the use of the drug was carried
out and explain this phenomenon of the large amount of consumption of benzodiazepines . In
a quantitative approach to organize tables into categories of factors , this research was
conducted in the Basic Health Unit in the Municipality of Cajazeiras - PB in that the study
population was composed of all members of the Family Health Program (PSF) in 1420
families ; the sample consisted of all patients who were drug treatment with anxiolytics ,
especially with Benzodiazepines were also 19 people . We realize that most users are female ,
over 60 , retired , use the drug daily, one tablet , the anxiolytic diazepam is the most used ,
most were oriented on the action of the drug in the treatment , but the minority was not
focused on the adverse effects , since most did a previous and current treatment in large part
the reason for the medication was to insomnia . The study shows that factors related to use of
the product , in particular difficulty sleeping (insomnia ) , was the main reason for the use of
psychotropic medicine . Through our descriptive analysis , we also observed that should have
a more focused attention to the female population and over 60 , retired , housewives , because
they are more prone to drug use , therefore we see the need for educational measures to guide
this population about the risks of chronic use of anxiolytics and especially for the realization
of measures of switching and monitoring the gradual discontinuation of chronic use of
psychotropic drugs for these users.
