Abstract:
Water is fundamental importance to life. The growing disorderly occupation of urban centers and the pollution of water sources are factors that cause the reduction of potable water on our planet. The municipality of Cuité was fueled mainly by water from the dam Boqueirão do Cais. However, the water shortage is a major problem that the population of the city has been facing in recent years. The scarcity of water in this region is characterized mainly by irregularities in rainfall and poor quality of available water. An alternative abstraction and water storage tank is used to capture rainwater and store it for months without precipitation. Groundwater is another alternative energy source that is easing the problem of water shortage in the region. In rural and urban areas, underground tanks and wells are used as a means of supply for human consumption, however the quality of this water can be affected by several factors, causing health risks, so it is necessary to analyze how the physic-chemical properties . The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of water cisterns from rain and also from underground wells located in the rural municipality of Cuité-PB. For physical and chemical analyzes of water samples from four tanks and three wells were collected, the parameters studied were pH, turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids, total alkalinity, total hardness and chlorides. The results showed that the water tanks for all analyzed parameters are values within the standards established by the Ministry of Health, Ordinance 2914/11. With respect to water wells for pH measurements, all wells had values within the set, as the turbidity, the well P.1 was equal to 5.65 NTU. The chloride concentration for P.2 and P.3 wells were 436.38 and 486.88 mg.L-1, respectively, for the hardness of the water wells were high, only the well P.1 meets value of 353.32 mg.L-1 below the maximum allowed value, being classified as very hard water. The alkalinity and electrical conductivity showed varying values, while for total dissolved solids showed very high values. So for the waters of the wells analyzed the majority of the parameters is outside the standard of acceptability for human consumption, on the other hand, the analyzes for the water cisterns had values that meet the physical and chemical standards.
