Resumo:
Childbirth is considered one of the most important moments for the woman, but the same
is also remembered as a process of intense pain and suffering. This study aims to identify
the non-pharmacological methods for pain relief in labor and delivery, which are
implemented by the nursing staff during the delivery process. This is a descriptive study of
the field, with a quantitative approach, which was conducted in the maternity Dr. Deotado
Cartaxo attached Regional Hospital Cajazeiras - PB, between the months of August and
September 2013. The survey had a population of 21 postpartum women and a sample of 17
women that had their children through normal delivery and that met the inclusion criteria
of the study. To collect the data we used a structured questionnaire with closed questions
which have been prepared in order to meet the objectives of the study. It was found that the
non-pharmacological measures most used by nursing staff were guidelines about breathing
and walking. With regard to pain relief was observed that the guidelines about breathing
and Swiss ball were the ones that most contributed to ease the pain. We conclude that non-
pharmacological methods for pain relief in labor is an important tool in building a more
humanized birth care and more comfort for the mother. In this sense, it is suggested that
further studies in this area are conducted to clarify the benefits that each method promotes
the woman in labor.
