Childhood obesity is a condition in which excess body fat compared to lean body mass prevails, is a theme that encourages attention because of the situation of nutritional transition that Brazil is facing. In this sense, the nurse plays a key role in the promotion and prevention of childhood obesity. Besides taking care of the child through a holistic view, these professionals must also worry about entering the community and family in this context, using health education as a tool to provide care. The study aimed to: general - understand the nurse Family Health Strategy in the municipality of Cuité-PB regarding the prevention and management of childhood obesity. Specific: To investigate the perception of nurses in relation to their role and the importance of integrating the healthcare team regarding the prevention and management of childhood obesity; Identify perceptions of nurses the main difficulties faced for the prevention and management of childhood obesity in primary care; Identify the strategies used by these professionals in the prevention and management of childhood obesity. This is an exploratory and descriptive study with qualitative approach, developed in Basic Health Units in the municipality of Cuité-PB. Data were collected from March 2014 through a semistructured interview script applied to six nurses working in these units. 1: Analysis of the data analysis technique of thematic or categorical content, where it was possible to build six thematic categories was used. Health promotion and prevention perceived as a practice centered legend diseases, changing behaviors and attitudes without considering the family, community, social and environmental influences; 2. Nurses and health professionals, as having correct knowledge of agents to treat the problem and the denial of the possibility of active participation of subjects in the process; 3. Cultural values, behaviors, social conditions and lifestyles of subjects as difficult in the prevention and management of childhood obesity; 4. Preventive actions where the predominant aspects of clinical practice and use of methodologies for knowledge transfer in the prevention and management of childhood obesity ; 5 . Health education appointed as a mere instrument , a means to achieve health ; 6 . Reduced to actions and techniques of information transfer with exclusive domain of " professional" without encouragement of participation of the subjects involved educational practice . The role of nurses in the FHS Cuité - guided PB is the traditional model of health by limiting their strategies to transfer knowledge , thus promoting health is not fully effective , because of the lack of flexibility that this style requires . It is hoped that this study can generate reflections on the possibility of actions for health promotion involving the community as active and participative subject of the health condition as well as point to the need for more discussions about new practices in health essentials the effective work of nurses across primary care to promote the health of children and adolescents with childhood obesity.
