Abstract:
The use and abuse of alcohol has represented major public health problem in
Brazilian youth. Thus, the situational diagnosis of patterns of alcohol consumption
among students is essential for the planning of actions to help prevent the use and
abuse, guiding young people on the need to adopt healthy behaviors that ensure the
achievement of individual and collective well- being. Thus, the study aimed to
characterize the profile of alcohol consumption among students of a public school
within the Paraíba. Quantitative research approach, descriptive and exploratory
cross, held in a state school in the municipality of reference Cajazeiras-PB during the
month of April 2013. The sample consisted of 301 high school students in the
morning shift. Data collection was performed by applying the questionnaire Alcohol
Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) adapted by study Cerqueira. The data
were organized and tabulated in SPSS, version 17.0. The research conformed to the
ethical rules governed by Resolution 196/96, with the application of Statement of
Consent (IC) and submission to the Ethics Committee (CEP). The results obtained
yielded a percentage of that consumed 45.8% of any drugs, including alcohol. Most
students (35.6%) reported experiencing some type of drug for the first time in the age
group 13-15 years. Of these, 19.9% said that the most common place of
consumption are the bars and clubs. Most students (33%) consume for fun, Beer was
the most consumed beverage (33.6%). Most participants reported that the first
experiment of alcohol occurred after entering the school. As for the family profile, it
was found that 70.8% of young people living with their parents and 78.1% stated that
maintains a dialogue with them. Thus, it was noticed that the rate of alcohol
consumption among students is high, indicating the need for preparation and
execution of policies aimed at the youth in context of psychosocial vulnerability.
Thus, we see the importance of the participation of several professionals and
institutions in the creation of strategies to prevent the abusive use of drugs,
especially in the school setting.
