Abstract:
Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are considered a serious public health
problem. Among these diseases is diabetes mellitus (DM), which reaches a considerable
portion of the world population. Determos it is important in preventive care and health
promotion in order to reduce the rates of onset of disease and consequently its complications.
In the elderly this disease is affecting large scale along with others, Hypertension (HBP) that
often accompanies diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the habits of life of elderly
enrolled in the FHS and its influence on the control of DM. It is an exploratory and
descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted with 23 subjects, from a
questionnaire with objective questions used by the researcher. The results showed that the
predominant age group was 60-69 years are most affected by DM, female, married, with low
education, and retirees with incomes of up to two minimum wages. Most respondents
reported cases of hypertension and diabetes in the family. According to the risk factors, most
do exercise, tend to have a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables excluding from its menu
rich in sugar and fat. Also not all reported intake of alcohol and tobacco and the daily use of
medications to control the condition. Given the findings are believed to have contributed to a
better understanding of the disease as well as report the best ways to live with the DM and
above all learn to control it.
