Resumen:
In the recent years infant population is inserted in a transition to the characteristic group of
overweight and obesity, it has increased significantly, according to studies that accompany
childhood to adulthood, being also a risk factor for the development of chronic diseases that
may result in undesirable clinical diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus,
dyslipidemia, insulin resistance syndrome or metabolic syndrome. Due to the increase of
obesity in children, high cases of pediatric metabolic syndrome have been accompanied in the
recent years. The present study was based on the following question: What is the relationship
of metabolic syndrome in childhood obesity in the clinical and epidemiological scenario? It
has as objective to conduct an analysis of the evidence available in the scientific literature, an
integrative literature review on the general concepts that involve the metabolic syndrome in
childhood obesity in the clinical and epidemiological setting. The present was based on a
descriptive approach of integrative review of literature regarding the metabolic syndrome in
childhood obesity, published between the period of 2009 to 2013 and collected from the
database Sicelo and Pubmed. Initially, 81 articles, published between 2009-2013, were pre-
selected, and after reading, 15 articles were chosen. It was observed in the literature that there
is no agreement regarding the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in the pediatric population,
but its prevalence has increased by association with childhood obesity in the recent years.
Therefore, a concept and a concrete diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in children is necessary.
