Traffic accidents are considered important causes of morbidity and mortality in Brazil, being one
of the countries with the highest incidence of violence on the roads. A growing number of
accidents that occur worldwide each year due several significant factors that impact on hasty
death of thousands of people and cause serious injury. Another important consequence of these
events is the impact caused the country's economy, more precisely for Public Health. The
objective of this study is to determine the profile of patients victims of traffic accidents in a
Regional Hospital in the State of Paraíba and clarify healthcare professionals conditions in which
victims are admitted in this service and the current situation of the research site. Since this is a
cross-sectional, epidemiological, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, which was
developed with the patients hospitalized were victims of accidents at Regional Hospital
Cajazeiras (HRC), through a questionnaire on weekends in the month of December 2013 and
January 2014 and were then coded and analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2010 and are presented as
graphs and tables. The sample consisted of 40 victims of traffic accidents and the results showed
that 78% (31) were male, aged 20-29 years (35%), followed by age group 30-39 years (27% ).
Regarding marital status predominated singles with 52% and most were elementary school filled
with 42%. It was found that 33% of victims had as a profession farmer, followed by students with
13% and 10% with Mason. The traumas were more prevalent in the region of the legs (58%) and
the region of the arms (27%). Loss of consciousness had 27% of accident victims, surgery was
needed in 67% and 45% of them were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.It
was found that 95% of motorcycle accidents involved, more frequent on Sunday (33%) during
daytime and more frequently in rural areas (60%). The data intensify the need to adopt focused
primarily on the vulnerable public in an attempt to reduce the frequency of these events, through
educational programs and stricter inspections preventive measures.
