Abstract:
Breastfeeding is considered one of the essential physical, mental growth and functional
elements, as well as a way to reduce infant mortality, especially during the first year of life.
The World Health Organization that children be exclusively breastfed until six months , and
that after this period , gradually start complementary feeding maintaining breastfeeding until
at least two years old. The present study has the general objective to verify the knowledge of
pregnant women attending the Family Health Strategy , about the importance of breastfeeding
and how to analyze the specific objectives understanding of pregnant women about the
benefits that breastfeeding provides for the growth and development of children identify the
knowledge of pregnant women about the benefits that breast milk provides for the
breastfeeding woman and verify that the educational practices applied in the Family Health
Strategy have contributed to a better clarification on the subject . The research is descriptive
cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, the same was held at the Family Health
Strategy II, in Effort neighborhood in the city of Sousa - PB. Was developed in 34 of 45
pregnant women who perform this prenatal health unit, corresponding to a sample of 75 %.
Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and implemented since January 2014.
The collection was made after the approval of the ethics committee in researching and signing
the consent form by the person responsible. Then the data were analyzed and presented in
graphs and tables. The research followed the ethical rules governed by Resolution 466/2012.
It was found by this study that the majority of mothers have information on basic issues of
breastfeeding for baby and for her. However, regarding some fundamental aspects knowledge
does not exist or is insufficient. Actions in relation to health education have been constant,
and the information has been passed through several strategies, however, the information does
not guarantee action. Therefore, health professionals should assist pregnant women in all
aspects and in particular nurses, why is the professional that most closely relates to women
during pregnancy and childbirth, and has an important role in education programs health.
