Resumen:
The sustainable usage of wood has been target of researches, that aims the preservation of
biomes that are about to disappear. Among them it can be cited the Caatinga as a meaningful
example. The reforestation, employing native species of each region is one of the main solutions
for the decrease of exploration of forest reserve. The main objective of this work was to study the
physical-mechanics characteristics of Cumaru wood (Amburana cearensis), a kind of species
provided by the biome Caatinga. The physical-mechanics properties were determined following
the recommendations of the Brazilian Standard Regulatory: Design of timber structures (NBR
7190/1997). The following tests were performed: determination of the moisture content, basic
and apparent density, dimensional stability and determination of resistance and stiffness
compression parallel to the fibers. The results indicate that Cumaru wood can be employed in
structures, in furniture and other pieces of construction.
