The use of textbooks in biology classes is a common practice among teachers and students. Often this resource presents figures and language that disadvantage the students understanding, especially regarding content considered difficult to understand, such as photosynthesis. This study aimed to perform a qualitative analysis and identify how the theme photosynthesis is being worked in biology textbooks used in the 1st year of high school in the public schools. For this, an analysis and classification into three categories was proposed. In the text appropriate information was found, as well as others that did not help in understanding of the subject. It was concluded that some textbooks present a subtle gap in the form of display this content, hindering student learning. In this context, it is important to reinforce that textbooks should not be used as the sole source of content research, because in these resources some information may compromise the construction of student knowledge and contribute to form misconceptions.
