Over the past 20 years, premature birth, which means, when delivery is done with less than 37 weeks of pregnancy, has attracted the interest of researchers in different parts of the world . This study aims to investigate the possible causes of premature births, relating them to the. socioeconomic characteristics, mother's reproductive history, pregnancy complications and tetal characteristics present in pape1work Statement of Live Births (DNV) and records of new boms . The research aimed to identify the profile Newborn premature according to the demographic and epidemiological data related to prematurity, considering this, discuss preventive measures of sho11and long term to know the identified factors. This was a cross sectional, descriptive and quant itative approach to epidemiological analysis, consisting of a sample of 41 records maternal and 47 live birth certificates of new boms who are bom under 36 weeks and 6 days, from January to December 2011, and have not needed to transfer to a Health Unit reference in neonatology in the state of Paraíba. / Maternity Deodato Cartaxo is responsible for 3.2% of all births and, assisting in prematurity with 3.5% of preterm bit1h in the state of Paraíba. The main risk factors found in the research include: age of mothers at risk, single mothers, low maternal education, primiparity, up to three miscarriage, cesarean section. According to the data, the profile of preterm infants was characterized by: females (60%), borderline prematurity (46%), Apgar scores at 1, 7-10 (47%) and at 5 min (74%), no significant congenital malformation, evolving hospital discharge (85%). As in other countries, the increase in preterm birth and it's impacts on public health is also a Brazilian reality, therefore, the study showed that premature births are directly influenced by the socioeconomic conditions of mothers, which hinder the improvement of education, Access to Health Unit, and consequently may subsequently influence the quality of life of these new boms.
