"A beleza não mora nos padrões": a importância da voz feminina na série Anne With an E - (2015-2017).

Abstract

The representation of women has long been shaped by social, cultural, and economic structures that, particularly in the nineteenth century, reinforced ideals of submission and domesticity. In this context, this study aims to analyze how the series Anne With an E re-signifies the female representation of the nineteenth century, linking it to contemporary debates on gender, autonomy, education, and beauty standards. This qualitative, bibliographic, and analytical-descriptive research uses the series itself (2017–2019) as its primary source, supported by theoretical references such as Michelle Perrot, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel de Certeau, Laura Mulvey, and Robert Rosenstone.The analysis revealed that the audiovisual production, by critically revisiting the past, deconstructs stereotypes of femininity by giving prominence to characters who challenge social norms, question aesthetic standards, and claim equality. Anne Shirley, in particular, represents resistance against the imposition of hegemonic models of behavior and appearance, while her journey emphasizes the role of education and sorority as instruments of female emancipation. It is concluded that Anne With an E goes beyond a historical portrait, presenting itself as an engaged narrative capable of dialoguing with women’s current struggles against persistent inequalities. The series reaffirms the transformative potential of media as a space for resistance and the construction of new social imaginaries, fostering critical reflections on gender, identity, and freedom.
