Abstract

Basic sanitation is of fundamental importance to guarantee environmental health in the geographic space. In this perspective, the objective of this study was to diagnose the existing reality caused by the lack of sanitation in the rural community of Sítio Saco, located in the city of Triunfo-PB. To this end, the following methodological approaches were taken: Diagnosis of the reality of the lack of sanitation and its impacts on the community, using a questionnaire and interviews with adults; holding a workshop at the Aflaudizio Pinheiro Dantas Rural School with the 8th grade class, which aimed to raise awareness among students about the issue of green septic tanks as a sustainable alternative for the community under study. The execution of all the aforementioned routes was carried out through bibliographical and documentary research, field work, photographic records, preparation of a model of the green pit together with students from the rural school and systematization of information in graphs, charts and tables. The results obtained from the research highlighted the deficits resulting from the lack of sanitation, which exposes rural populations to significant health problems and environmental contamination. Therefore, given this scenario, it is expected that the results of this study may contribute to the understanding of the social and environmental problems arising from this deficit, and may contribute to the formulation of projects for the implementation of green septic tanks as an alternative to resolving the lack of sewage service both in the community of Sítio Saco and in other rural communities, in order to mitigate this scenario which constitutes a serious public health problem.
