Abstract

This work investigates the rise of bolsonarismo as a political phenomenon in Brazil between 2014 and 2018, analyzing its relationship with the institutional crisis triggered by Operation Lava Jato and the 2016 Coup, culminating in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. The study argues that bolsonarismo is a direct legacy of this period of instability, consolidating itself as a New Right that combines neoliberal discourse with conservative and authoritarian values. To this end, it examines the restructuring of the right-wing in the global context, highlighting the resurgence of neoliberalism from the 1970s onward and its fusion with moral and nationalist agendas. In Brazil, this model took shape under Bolsonaro’s government, in which Paulo Guedes’ economic agenda was legitimized through a discourse of cultural warfare, moral panic, and political repression. Using the framework of the History of the Present Time and discourse analysis, this study investigates how this intersection between economy and morality enabled the consolidation of bolsonarismo as a cohesive political project, bringing together business, religious, and military sectors.
