Abstract

This paper analyzes Disney's film Aladdin (1992) based on the theoretical contributions of Edward Said and Michel Foucault, as well as the gender perspective of authors Teresa de Lauretis, Joan Scott, and Judith Butler. The paper begins with Said's (2007) theoretical conception of Orientalism, understood as a discourse that constructs the East from the perspective of the West, carrying cultural and political stereotypes. Beyond this dimension, the paper also discusses Foucault's notion of power, in dialogue with concepts of performativity (J. Butler) and gender technology (T. Lauretis). The methodology employed articulates musical analysis, based on Napolitano (2002), and image analysis, based on Boris Kossoy (2021), allowing us to explore how sound and visual representations act in the symbolic construction of gender and power. The analysis reveals that the film creates an exoticized imagery of the feminine, while simultaneously structuring hierarchies of masculinities that compose a stereotype attributed to heteronormative appearance. Thus, the study highlights how seemingly harmless cultural products participate in the production of political, social, and gender discourses, contributing to the maintenance of Orientalist visions in the collective imagination.
