INFRAESTRUTURAS E ADENSAMENTO URBANO EM ASSENTAMENTOS POPULARES: ESTUDO DA BACIA DO RIO CUIÁ

Abstract

From the 1970s onwards, the Cuiá River basin region began to shift from its previously rural dynamics to become one of the main axes of growth and expansion of the city. The opening of large subdivisions and the construction of residential complexes under the policies of the National Housing Bank (BNH) encouraged the occupation of peripheral areas by low-income populations, later resulting in the emergence of informal settlements. Characterized by irregularities and lacking restrictive occupational control standards, these territories became densely populated by those who could not afford to live in the formal city. In addition, the absence of adequate infrastructure meant that these settlements resulted in the reproduction of urban and social segregation. Therefore, this study aims to understand the relationship between infrastructure and urban densification patterns in informal settlements in the Cuiá River basin in João Pessoa, Paraíba. This research adopts a qualitative-quantitative approach, analytical and propositional in nature, divided into the stages of theoretical framework, methodology, diagnoses of informal settlements regarding the availability of infrastructure and urban densification, as well as the definition of intervention guidelines for cases with extreme characteristics. Among the results achieved are the characterization, correlation, and cross-referencing of infrastructure and densification variables, with emphasis on water supply, sanitation, surface drainage, and paving (infrastructure) and building density (densification).
