Xica versus Chica: desvelando representações culturais da mulher negra brasileira como instrumento de educação

Abstract

The research examined the representation of Xica da Silva, a black historical figure in Brazil, in the works "Memórias do Distrito Diamantino da Comarca de Serro Frio" (1868), by Joaquim Felício dos Santos, and "Xica da Silva" (2007), by João Felício dos Santos. Focusing on the distortions in the narratives of historical black figures, such as Xica da Silva, from a white and male perspective, the study seeks to investigate how her representation in these works reflects the marginalization and underestimation of black women in the historical and social context of Brazilian literature. Using a qualitative, exploratory and bibliographical approach, the research analyzed the representations of Xica da Silva in both works. The methodology included a detailed analysis of the works, focusing on the historical discourse and the literary representation of the character. To support the study, the theoretical contributions of various authors were considered, such as Thompson (2002), Le Goff (1990), Hall (2016), Bakhtin and Voloshinov (2006), Moscovici (2003), Fowler (1979), Fanon (2008), Carneiro (2003; 2004), Regina Dalcalgaste (2011), Pesavento (2012), Chartier (1991), Souza (2019), Gomes (2008), Carr (1996), Aínsa (1991), Santos (2018), Esteves (2010), Eagleton (2003), Orlandi (2020), Júnia Furtado (2003; 2008), Souza (2019), Priore (2000), Ribeiro (2018), Carneiro (2003), Gonzales (1982; 1984) Aguiar (1988), Merian (2008), Gadotti (1999), Fazenda (2008), Cosson (2018), Zilberman and Silva (1998), In addition to analyzing representations, the dissertation addressed the historical, social and discursive constructions of black female bodies, exploring how racial and gender stereotypes are products of historical and social contexts. It also proposed a thematic approach for secondary schools, aimed at stimulating reflections on the representation of black women in Brazilian society. Finally, it emphasized the importance of social and educational advocacy in promoting a fairer and more inclusive representation of black women in Brazilian society.
